How did Japanese auto companies of the 1970s increase profit, despite the quota from the US placed on imports?
Q. Some time in the 1970s, the US placed a quota on Japanese automobile imports. This limited and thus decreased the quantity sold from Japan, yet they still prospered financially. I'm inclined to believe that this is due to raised prices from them... But does anyone know in detail?
Asked by Mines & Yours - Fri Jun 5 04:24:04 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Actually, the quotas were put in place in 1981: There were three reactions on the part of the Japanese: raising prices on existing small cars; moving to larger cars: and producing cars in the U.S. The Japanese were selling low-priced cars with correspondingly low profit margins. When the quotas came into effect, they couldn't sell as many cars so it became profitable to import larger, more expensive, cars because they had higher profit margins. Note how all the luxury brands - Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti - were launched in the U.S. in the late 80s: Also Note how Honda started manufacturing the Accord in the U.S. in 1982.

What were the crazy styled hot wheels cars with the monster drivers from the 1970s called?
Q. In the 1970s Hot Wheels had a line of cars with crazy zany styles and oversized monsterlike drivers. What was this line called? They were like the Ed Roth Rat Fink cartoons. I collected them as a child but can't remember what they were called.
Asked by Superscottee - Fri Aug 21 17:23:45 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They weren't Hot Wheels. The closest things they had were Zowees and Farbs. Ed Roth's Beatnik Bandit was one of the original 16 Hot Wheels, but didn't feature any figures. I haven't seen any small scale cars from that era of Ed Roth style. I know the larger model kits were quite popular. There was also a series of trading cards called "Odd Rods".

How well did Inflation Protected Securities do in the 1970s?
Q. Please provide a chart if you have one. If not, please provide some annual returns during the 1970s. OK, since they have only been around since 1997, how do you THINK they would have done in the 1970s if they were around?
Asked by Dr Jim - Tue Feb 5 10:34:00 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They have only been around since 1997. See the link. If they had been around in the 70's, they would have done much better than other bonds, due to the bad inflation. If they had been around in the 80's they probably would have done less well than other bonds, as the 80's showed a marked drop in inflation.

Is it possible to make a generator out of a 1970s 650cc Yamaha motorcycle engine?
Q. I was just wondering if it is possible to make a generator out of a 1970s 650cc Yamaha motorcycle engine if put some sort of radiator on it?
Asked by Brrdog - Tue Aug 26 23:58:11 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Of course you could. Here's a power head for it: Attach a pulley sheave to the crankshaft and run a belt to the power head. You may need to experiment to find the correct pulley sizes - or if you are good at engineering you could do the math to figure out the ideal sheave sizes. And you could use a circuit from the generator to power an electric fan to provide airflow through the radiator. Edit: I'm not sure if that engine is air-cooled or liquid cooled. If it's air-cooled you might want to add an oil cooler and use a fan on the oil cooler and on the cylinder fins.

The UK had suffered because of conservative theology and the greed and selfishness that goes hand in hand with it . Thatcher before she came to power was education secretary , one of her famous acts was to take free milk from the kids"Thatcher Milk Snatcher". Then the biggest insult to all of us was when she became "Prime Minister" The Sex Pistols merely said what all the youth felt in that period and the expectations were pretty grim . A. The 1970's saw two important legal protections put in place, Title IX in 1972 and Roe vs Wade in 1973. Also, social events such as Billie Jean King scoring victory for female athletes when she beat Bobby Riggs in a tennis tournament watched by 48,000,000 people and the first battered women's shelters opening in the US, in Tucson, Arizona and St. Paul, Minnesota in 1973 enormously increased public awareness of women's struggles, portraying women trying to rise in a socially positive light vs the traditional negative light. Before the 70's, women who struggled to rise were considered to be "in league with the devil", demented, disturbed, "dykes". The 70's marks the beginning of that shift from a solid wall of negative social oppression… [cont.]

Why did people carpet everything in the 1970s?
Q. I was just thinking back to the house I lived in growing up. It was built in the 1970s and when my parents moved in in the 1980s, every room was carpeted including the kitchen and while the bathroom was not, my parents soon carpeted it with a lovely brown shag. I'm finding out that there were houses even more extreme than this: carpeted walls, ceilings, etc. My question is: why? When I think about how hard it is to keep carpet clean and everything that can seap into it, it's just disgusting.
