A revolution occurred in 20th century music listening as the radio gained popularity worldwide, and new media and technologies were developed to record, capture, reproduce and distribute music. Because music was no longer limited to concerts, opera-houses, clubs, and domestic music-making, it became possible for music artists to quickly gain fame nationwide and sometimes worldwide. Conversely, audiences were able to be exposed to a wider range of music than ever before, giving rise to the phenomenon of world music. Music performances became increasingly visual with the broadcast and recording of music videos and concerts. Music of all kinds also became increasingly portable. Copyright laws were strengthened, but new technologies such as file sharing also made it easier to record and reproduce copyrighted music illegally. Twentieth-century music brought new freedom and wide experimentation with new musical styles and forms that challenged the accepted rules of music of earlier periods. Faster modes of transportation allowed musicians and fans to travel more widely to perform or listen. Amplification permitted giant concerts to be heard by those with the least expensive tickets, and the inexpensive reproduction and transmission or broadcast of music gave rich and poor alike nearly equal access to high quality music performances. 'White Music' is a more general term for pan-diatonicism. You missed out on one word which helps in understanding what this is. "White KEY Music." Pandiatonicism (pan - all, universal + diatonic) is a term for musical procedure based on use of the notes of a diatonic scale (seven pitches), the new development in the early 1900's was the composers used the diatonic materials freed from the expectations or restrictions of common practice harmony. The term Pandiatonic is used to describe this style. The easiest way to imagine it is a piano piece using only the white keys (hence the name). The difference is the previously normal chord functions, and expectations of where they do or don't go, is avoided. The 20th century is where you begin to have a departure from the tonal idiom that was the ideal of art music in previous eras, such as baroque, classical and romantic. In the late romantic era, you can see departures from tonality and the traditional dominant to tonic cadence with uses of advanced musical language such as chromaticism. However, it wasn't until the 20th century where composers made full use of atonality and did not rely on traditional harmonic progressions. You have composers like Schoenberg, who composed 12-tone and atonal music, or even composers like Debussy, who while still being tonal in a sense, relied more on colours instead of harmonic… [cont.] Answered by Jessica - Tue Dec 12 14:00:55 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "20th century music" Fox Logo With 16 Bit - VidoEmo - Watch Share Download Video
