A. The Lonnie effect was to encourage kids to pick up guitars and other instruments and make their own music. He started the birth of Skiffle music in the 50's UK (Known in the 20/30s USA as Rent party music where people brought all kinds of instruments along, sang any songs they knew and money was raised for the rent) The DJ Jack Jackson (Former band leader) played a track from a Chris Barber LP* which caught the public interest and Donegan's career took off. The Beatles and many other groups all cite Donegan as their spiritual mentor.

How has Jazz influenced the Music of the 20th Century?
Q. I have to write a speech about how jazz of the 1920's influenced the music of the 20th century. I'm getting stuck and need some help does anyone have some ideas and if you could does any one have good references?
Asked by Jake - Mon Mar 16 12:33:59 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well, here is my take: Jazz is the first genre to go in and adapt other genres. When Jazz started to evolve from ragtime to big band to bebop, fans of other types of music started to take notice. Artists like Miles Davis, who spent his career evolving his sound and style, became a staple in the invention of fusion, and acid jazz which ultimately changed rock, R&B, Funk, and other types of music. Davis, Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorious, Ray Charles and many other jazz musicians help start the trend of cross-compilations...play ing on albums of artists who are not jazz artists.

20th century music?
Q. There are so many contributing factors to music in any particular era. The 20th century is still recent and because of that we are able to see more of the overall picture and get a better feeling of the social and political mood which had a direct effect on the arts. What are some important inventions that helped shape our world and therefore the art that we listen to and see?
Asked by kuku m - Sun Aug 26 23:47:53 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most definitely the electric guitar had a profound effect on the music of the 20th century. From Charlie Christian in the late 1920s becoming the first electric jazz guitarist to Chuck Berry singing "Johnny Be Good," to Joe Satriani's screaming solos to Stevie Ray Vaughn's Blues masterpieces to Rock and Roll today, the electric guitar is one of the biggest influences on music in the 20th century.

What 20th Century music is nice?

A. Well there's lots. Appalachian Spring By Copeland is very listenable. Gershwin is very listenable in all. Are you looking for music to play? I'm guessing Piano? 20th century music is generally excurriatingly difficult more because of rhythmn than anything else but generally it's hard all around (for example Samuel Barber uses 2 different rhtyhmns at the same time for some Piano pieces. To say the least, it's hard to count that in your head!). If you just mean to listen; Barber, Copeland and Gershwin are all listenable (and American). Debussy wrote absolutely gorgeous music like the famous Clair De Lune, but personally I like Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun better. Also Ravel had a simple piece named Bolero that is incredibly catchy and… [cont.]

Recommendations for memorizing 20th century piano music?
Q. Alright, I've always been fairly good at memorizing piano music. But I've been playing some 20th century pieces lately and I'm really getting annoyed with them, because I can't memorize them for the life of me. I think the problem is that I really think harmonically. So if I'm playing Mozart, memorizing is very easy because I memorize harmonic structure. But in 20th century music, I often don't have that luxury. Does anybody have any general strategies that they like to employ when memorizing modern and contemporary art music? That's it! Forget the other stuff, I'll just learn 4'33''. Hahaha. joshuacharlesmorris- I could definitely stand to do more analysis, that's for sure. A. Try to learn the position of the fingers when you play the chords. Try to learn and to remember where the technical difficulties. This helps a lot. Than, try to remember which musical idea (or technical difficulty, if not) follows another one. At the end, after some weeks (or months) you''ll be sure on the piece and you'll can learn it again by heart, note by note (this is a good method to be sure about this type of music when you are on the stage). Hope that helped! All the best and good luck!

A. Well when you think about it, fifty years ago everything musically was completely self made. If you wanted a band you had to learn the instruments associated with the style of music you were involved in. The music itself was also different. Lyrics spoke of things that everyone could relate to without being overly explicit. Now it's easy to create music on a computer and record whatever curse words and garbage you want over it. I guess, to sum it up, the more liberal we become, the more music loses it's integrity. If you think about it, 50 years from now is anyone likely to refer to the music of this generation as "golden oldies"? I personally don't think so. A. In the 20th Century classical music( Western Art Music) fractured into many different genres. This was mainly due to the fact the composers such as Strauss and Mahler pushed the tonal system to breaking point. Composers such as Berio, Stockhausen, and Ligeti invented a new system all together called serialism. Composers such as Philip Glass, Steve Reich and John Adam stuck with Tonal system (minimalist) Other composers such as Britten, were neo-classical, they looked backwards for inspiration, to the classical period. Choosing to leave out emotion in favour of art (due to the world war, people wanted to escape from emotional feelings) Their isn't one specific style that composers write in like composers generally did in the previous… [cont.]

His music has this ominous, nervous feeling to it which appeals to me a lot. Other composers (which are still alive) worth mentioning are Henryk Gorecki (Symphony No. 3) and Arvo Part.

Vintage Music From The Early 20th Century?
Q. How did the vintage music of the early 20th century differ from the big band nostalgia of the 30's-40's,oldies from the 50's-60's and finally today's popular music from the 70's-present?

A. Vintage music of the early 20's: Much of it was based on tin pan alley and vaudeville styles. Very simple tunes and easy to remember simple melodies, "ditties", usually with piano and one singer, maybe a ukulele. thirties and forties were more of the big band, horn-influenced sound. 50s and 60s -- first the doo-wop bands of the early fifties, then R&B and the introduction of rock and roll in the late fifties and early sixties.

Prior to the 20th century, music was often performed in bars, nightclubs, and theatres, where the audience expressed themselves by cheering. Music was limited to royalty and the elite.
