What is White Music in 20th century classical music history?
Q. It's supposed to be some kind of term used in early 20th century classical music when atonality began to emerge.

A. 'White Music' is a more general term for pan-diatonicism. You missed out on one word which helps in understanding what this is. "White KEY Music." Pandiatonicism (pan - all, universal + diatonic) is a term for musical procedure based on use of the notes of a diatonic scale (seven pitches), the new development in the early 1900's was the composers used the diatonic materials freed from the expectations or restrictions of common practice harmony. The term Pandiatonic is used to describe this style. The easiest way to imagine it is a piano piece using only the white keys (hence the name). The difference is the previously normal chord functions, and expectations of where they do or don't go, is avoided. The neo-classical music of… [cont.]

A. You could start by going to the American Memory site at the Library of Congress, they have a large section of digitized sheet music and some recordings That should provide you with some education on music from that era. then try this link for professional sources of soundtrack music

A. Taking a broad approach, modernism and postmodernism are probably the two biggest influences on 20th century music. However, you need to narrow your terms of reference: are you talking about Western art music, popular music, non-Western music or all three? Ethnomusicology, while a development in late 20th century musicological study, is probably not what the title of the essay is looking for. Concentrate on the music itself rather than the study thereof.

A. Classical music: things like uncomplicated harmony, well balanced phrases, steady tempo and use of arpeggios and broken chords. Baroque - use of figured bass, like classical music, steady tempo, but no use of dynamics (pianos weren't invented at the time) and there was no ablility to play loud or soft. Romantic music: large range of dynamics, use of pedals (obviously lots of music written for piano during this period), expressive and use of chords. Modern/20th Century music: unusal key signtaures and use of jazz key signatures such as 5/4 and 7/4, chromatic notes/scales used widely and very fluid tempo. Good luck with the exam - take it you're not doing ABRSM if you need to know this?

20th century music?
Q. There are so many contributing factors to music in any particular era. The 20th century is still recent and because of that we are able to see more of the overall picture and get a better feeling of the social and political mood which had a direct effect on the arts. What are some important inventions that helped shape our world and therefore the art that we listen to and see?

A. Most definitely the electric guitar had a profound effect on the music of the 20th century. From Charlie Christian in the late 1920s becoming the first electric jazz guitarist to Chuck Berry singing "Johnny Be Good," to Joe Satriani's screaming solos to Stevie Ray Vaughn's Blues masterpieces to Rock and Roll today, the electric guitar is one of the biggest influences on music in the 20th century.

A. Hmm, that would be late romantic era. Somehow reminds me of Rachmaninoff. Also impressionism in Stravinsky's music that will lead to modern day of music period. It is strong, related to romance, philosophy, arts and many more. There is a struggle in the early 20th century's music to increase emotional expression and power to describe a deeper truths, while preserving or even extending the formal structures from the classical period. Musical romanticism reached a rhetorical point in around 1960. Seems that as if the future lay with avant garde styles of composition, or with neo-classicism of some kind Later, it is expanding into neoclassicism to electronic music nowadays.

A. Well there's lots. Appalachian Spring By Copeland is very listenable. Gershwin is very listenable in all. Are you looking for music to play? I'm guessing Piano? 20th century music is generally excurriatingly difficult more because of rhythmn than anything else but generally it's hard all around (for example Samuel Barber uses 2 different rhtyhmns at the same time for some Piano pieces. To say the least, it's hard to count that in your head!). If you just mean to listen; Barber, Copeland and Gershwin are all listenable (and American). Debussy wrote absolutely gorgeous music like the famous Clair De Lune, but personally I like Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun better. great music icons of the 20th century?
Q. I'm teaching a peer-lesson for one of my education classes in college in a couple days and can really teach any kind of lesson, as long as it pertains to my content area, which is music. I plan on teaching a lesson on 20th century music icons. I considered focusing it completely on John Lennon, but figured that I could focus on others as well. Elvis is a big one too that I could focus on. I don't want to go over more then 5 or 6 different people. Anyone have any suggestions for some "major icons" of the 20th century?

Q. Who made more of an impact on 20th century music, Mitch Mitchell or Mitch Miller?
Asked by Dr Know-It-All - Wed Sep 9 18:08:11 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Mitch Miller, as the producer of several recordings for Columbia Records made a major impact on 20th century music. Even though he hated rock and roll, vocal artists such as Johnny Mathis, Guy Mitchell, Rosemary Clooney, Frankie Laine, Johnny Ray, etc., flourished, selling millions of records. Also, his television program was very popular with adults. Miller was innovative; who else would use a harpsichord or French Horn as major instruments? He also is not given credit for being a pioneer of bringing Country and Western music to popularity. Several artists such as Tony Bennett, Frankie Laine, and Rosemary Clooney had pop hits with country songs, paving the way for future stars as Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell, Bobby Goldsboro.

Asked by Kevin - Wed Nov 14 09:04:54 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It didn't "end" per se. Perhaps it isn't written as much now because the historical conditions that gave birth to it have changed. 20th-Century music, also known as atonal or experimental music, came about because composers sought to break away from the Western sound (Viennese, Classical, Romantic), some for the desire to discover aesthetic freshness and break away from the long tradition of Western music, while others for political reasons. (For example, at that point in history, what we now generally refer to as "classical music" was largely associated with Germany and Austria, and during the World War II period, some composers of Jewish descent embraced atonality as a kind of political statement against the Western musical tradition,… [cont.]

The most famous composers from the twenith century are Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Prokofiev, Ravel, Bela Bartok, Shostakovich, Berg, Schorenbug (I know I'm not spelling it right) and on and on. 19th century has quite a few so I'll name my favorites: Beethoven (now I know you're teacher is not refering to this guy but he lived in the early part of the 19th century), Schubert, Chopin, Wagner, Pucchini (both Wagner and Pucchini wrote mainly operas), Tchaicovsky, Mussorgsky, Korsakov, Liszt (I don't like him but pianists do), Schuman, Mendelssohn,… [cont.]
