What pre 20th century civilizations created the harmony found in modern pop music?

I've listened to traditional music from many different cultures and to me, it just sounded like a bunch of noise and wasn't really coherent, traditional Asian, traditional African, Native American, I've heard them all, so how exactly did modern musical sense come into being and spread to the whole world

Let's give credit where credit is due---African - Americans: Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, R&B, Country, ROCK & ROLL [all originated with them] After the cold war, when the U.S. because a world super-power in every sense of the word, it enacted a sort of cultural imperialism--spreading it's culture around them world. Black Americans, during this period, had little to no avenues for economic mobility; the ones that were available to them, were the arts & entertainment, and even then, they had to claw to get gigs. Consequently, what resulted was a stream of high caliber artists: Micheal Jackson, Prince, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston, whose talents were so epic that they could not be denied.
