Is it arrogant to believe that you can seek redemption/absolution for your wrong doings?
Q. In other words. Don't you think it's a unacceptable to believe that it's ok to do wrong by another as long as a deity (according to you belief) says its ok? It sounds so arrogant. Your thoughts.

A. Arrogant, immature, selfish. "I can do what ever I want cause my god will forgive me" nah nah nanh na " my god's better than your god" NO. Not ok. Will there ever come a day when people are able to accept responsibility for their own actions and simply do the right thing?

Do sacraments like communion, holy water, and absolution have any more power than what we ascribe to the?
Q. Is there any real power in the use of sacraments. Many Churches, such as Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox use these. Do they have any real powers beyond what we ascribe them to have? Or are they just idols?

A. well, they're definitely not idols, you don't worship them and you don't pray to them, i know, i'm orthodox. anyway, they do have a lot of power though, spiritual power, for example, whenever i come from communion i feel so pure and clean, and especially after i eat and drink the flesh and blood of jesus christ, it's just so amazingly peaceful, and just being in church and having the priest asking you your name and really the entire ritual is almost out of this world. and holy water too, we always have some around the house, and we drink from it every morning. not to mention the fact that it stays fresh, unlike normal water. we get some every year on saint john the baptist day, and even a year later in still has the same properties, it… [cont.]

What type of sins are so bad the Pope can only grant absolution?
Q. What type of sins are so bad the Pope can only grant absolution? WOW! I didnt realize I would get such a response. I guess my questions stems from an article in which the Catholic church has "opened its doors" to something that hasnt been done in 800 years. In that article it says that "certain confessions have been reserved for the Pope to grant absolution." I am also a Catholic, but not a good one evidently.

A. Here is a website with an article on that very subject: According to this article, the five "ultimate crimes" are abortion, using the Eucharistic host in Satanic rites, clergy pedophile offences, violation of the confessional, and "offences against the person of the Pope." They can only be forgiven by the Pope himself. Edit: Once again, people here demonstrate that they have a learning disability. Thus far, no one else has answered the question that was actually asked, as opposed to taking an opportunity to foam at the mouth against Catholicism's teachings. I think we ought to call this disorder "Fundalexyia." Edit #2 Thanks for the additional information, Anonymous. The article is very brief and doesn't go into much detail. I'm… [cont.]

Q. Can you be given absolution from a priest, if you confess to having an abortion?
Asked by Jk - Sat Apr 26 06:57:42 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes and He does if your heart is set against not doing it again. Some people use abortion as birth control. How very sad. No doubt anyone who has had an abortion whether a mate or parent or the actual pregant woman has been feeling the hurt and loss if they have a purity of heart. Once it's done it's over and knowing you have played a part in the death of a baby has to be very hurtful. I think that in itself is enough punishment for anyone and knowing our merciful God I would say He does too. The key here is that you are sorry and will not do this again. If God can forgive those who hung on the cross beside him how much more will he do for us? You must remember His love is all forgiving. Once you ask for forgiveness it's done! Some… [cont.]

Lawyer's advice and absolution from accountability?
Q. Does anyone know what the US law is concerning getting advice from a lawyer and that advice absolving you from accountability? Although it is being used in other veins, it is my understanding that some criminals would go to their lawyers to get advice about an issue. When it came to being prosecuted, the situation could be mitigated, or totally dropped, because their lawyer told them that their actions were lega.
Asked by Dogjudge - Mon Jun 25 11:47:25 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The defense of relying on a lawyer's advice will usually not work. There are limited instances where reasonable reliance on the advice of a government administrative agency's lawyer, like the IRS or state attorney general's office, may be a defense but that is rare and you must have a letter like an IRS "revenue ruling" or SEC "no-action letter" for it to be binding. Private lawyers are generally prohibited from facilitating the commission of a future crime. They are ethically bound to either refuse to give advice of if they find out that their advice is going to be used to commit a crime then they are bound to try to prevent the crime. Failure to do so will subject the lawyer to disciplinary procedures and possibly disbarment. This is… [cont.]

What is the name of the following logical fallacy?
Q. A) misbehaves. B) misbehaves, but their behaviour is worse. A) is absolved of guilt because B) is worse. I can't for the life of me think of the name of it. It's basically an implicit absolution from blame purely because someone else's actions are considered more egregious. Thanks. Thanks, Fug, but I'm actually after the name of the fallacy, not other fallacious beliefs which fit. You're great though, and I love you...hee.
Asked by Slightly Dark Francis - Tue Aug 4 01:13:41 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are as many names for fallacies as there are individual instances of fallacies. Lots of critical thinking texts contain lots of different names and categorizations of fallacies. In general it is better to be able to explain why something is a fallacy than it is to remember some name for it. According to Fogelin and Sinnott-Armstrong's "Understanding Arguments", the most recent text I've taught from, this is a version of the "tu quoque" fallacy (free translation: the "and you also" fallacy). When someone is accused of wrongdoing, they may respond "and you too" or even "but you're even worse" to both condone their actions and to deflect attention. (btw, one might call this a red herring for the aspect of the fallacy that's meant… [cont.]
