A. You can use ANY music video posted on YouTube for this one where there's a soloist and pianist as the accompaniment! Watch the interaction between the performer and the accompanist--the physical gestures that indicate continuing through different movements, tempo, time changes, and the like. I also suggest you find videos between performers that have limited physical movements in terms of cues--like a bass clarinetist or tubist. Watch to see if you can spot any physical cues that are not "standard." For example, I'm a bass clarinetist and instead of head bobs to cue a downbeat, I take an audible breath and move my instrument slightly to the side. YouTube has an endless wealth of videos of classical performers. Type in a search and get… [cont.]

How do I play the accompaniment instead of the melody?
Q. I'm very used to playing the melody by ear and so naturally that's what I play when I want to learn a song. But if I want to sing along, can I still sing with the melody? Or must I sing with the accompaniment and how do I play that? Eg. Left hand, right hand? Could you give me some tips? Thanks!
Asked by Aurora Borealis - Tue May 19 03:14:21 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I would try to learn the chords of the song, when you know the melody try to figure out the chords. So when you sing you can make up an accompaniment, either being just block chords or a made-up piano part. thats what I would do.

A. Wouldn't help you to do your homework for you. However, picture in your mind dancing without music. How would you do? Can you imagine the tempo? Would it help you to hear the music? How would it help you. If you are performing in front of an audience, how would an audience enjoy your dance without music? What sort of mood are you creating?

A. I would be very surprised to find out that such a thing existed. I can't imagine there is much demand for it. For smaller works, perhaps but not for something large scale like the Christmas Oratorio. As an alternative perhaps you can arrange one of the following: Is there a local community college orchestra that might be interested in participating? How about having the music recorded on a computer? There might be an enterprising electronic music person in your area (the community college comes to mind again) who might be able to transcribe the orchestration to a synthesizer. It won't sound perfect but it can sound close enough to make it worth while. Plus, you'd have much more control over tempos, etc. It's conceivable there… [cont.]

help please! I need a way to practice an audition song with piano accompaniment ?
Q. I have an audition on Wednesday (24th) and I need to sing a song with piano accompaniment. I'm doing "wishing you were somehow here again" from phantom of the opera. I'm getting the sheet music for the accompanist to play for the audition but I need to practice it before so I know how to sing with the piano. I don't have a piano or voice teacher though. Does anyone know if there is a recording of the accompaniment online, like on youtube or anything that I could practice singing to? Thank you!

A. This might help: It's a "karaoke" version of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, with piano accompaniment and flute playing (very softly) the melody. There are other versions on Youtube -- if you go to this one, the others will be over on the right side of the screen. Good luck with your audition!

Know of a "Devil went down to Georgia" recording Without violin to use as accompaniment?
Q. I'd like to find a soundtrack to play with as an accompaniment while I play violin. Thanks!
Asked by lsmerage - Wed Feb 18 09:57:13 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I don't think you're going to have much luck.. since the whole point of the song is that it is a fiddle competition.. so without the violin/fiddle part, there is essentially no song. Perhaps you could ask some friends to play the song without the violin part and record it? Then you would have what you need?

A. Listen to Rubenstein - one of the finest interpreters of Chopin in the 20th Century. Now then. For the practicals: and this is going to sound awfully silly - BUT if you let this come out in your music - Oh my, my, my. Remember this: Chopin's music (all of it) is the music of love. The baring of the soul. At the time of their composition, the waltz was the most passionate of dances - much like the tango is today. So be passionate. Be in love - as Chopin was... That's precisely what they're for, after all. Dancing. Look I know this sounds silly - but try this. Take… [cont.]

Q. Me and my friend want to perform a song for our school, but we don't know which one to do. I am going to be playing it on the Piano, but i can learn it just by listening. So, if someone could please give me a good song, that would be great.

A. be more specific! you could always choose a good song people would recognize, but that also depends on the crowd your playing for. If you want to please the crowd think of a song they would enjoy to hear. Think of what would be a good response. Some crowds respond well to journey and others to korn. The choices are really endless. Maybe you should take a small survey next time you go to school asking the students what they would like to hear from a selection of songs you would enjoy playing?
