What aesthetics do you find in modern/avant garde classical music?
Q. I kind of like it, but I'd much rather listen to something that makes me feel structured and fulfilled. (most of the time, anyway) I'm being as open as possible. Just don't go artsy on me, thanks.

A. First, I have to say, you deserve a good answer or two and I hope you get that result. To that point I ask you to consider "structured" for you is Familiar Structure, and other things may be just as structured but you cannot, as yet, recognize those structures. They will be more individual from piece to piece, even from the same composer. You can no longer rely on music having one of several set formats when you initially audition a new piece. Repeated listening is a must, to gain familiarity with any one new piece. Try John Adams' Shaker Loops, the original version for seven strings, or the string orchestra version (conducted by the composer). Morton Feldman: Piano and String Quartet. with the advancement of science , the concept of soul is gradually diminishing?
Q. if we submit to that how can we explain consciousness, conscience, moral responsiblility, remorse, vanity, aesthetic experience, music, creation-creator bond, occasional acts of selflessness where personal benefits is significantly undermined for the sake of another person, sense of self-hood and all other phenomena that are distinctly human
Asked by Beauty - Sun Aug 16 09:24:25 2009 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. What do you mean "if we submit to that"? Why would you say that accepting scientific principles is a "submission." Submission *to* an idea is a religious concept. One submits to something when it is more powerful than you are. Science is a product of human intellect, and therefore is not more powerful than we are. (This is why it is contradictory when Creationists argue that science is "just the product of men", at the same time they accuse science of being a religion. You can't have it both ways. ) Let me give you an analogy that should answer your question. Does the science of childbirth diminish the miracle of it? In other words, does knowing how human reproduction works ... meiosis, gamete production, ovulation, sperm and… [cont.]

Which was a factor in the development of Impressionistic painting?
Q. 1. painters needed new means of expressing horrors of WW1 2. the "realistic" schools had become obsolete after the invention of photography 3. painters sought a style that paralleled aesthetics of Impressionistic music 4. oil latex paint became scarce, new water based paints were better, new brush strokes came about.
Asked by Alix - Tue Mar 31 18:24:15 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Number two sounds the best here. 3 isn't that bad but I think Impressionist music lagged a little behind painting. This answer implies the painters were influenced by the composers. I don't think that's true. Number 4 is definitely NOT true. Most all Impressionist paintings are oil based. 1 is also NOT true. Impressionism came way before WWI and employed completely different subject matters, water lilies not dead people.

What are the hip lesbians listening to these days?
Q. I've committed to making a mix for a lesbian couple I am friends with who are moving in together. I wanted to make a "party on a disc" mix... the kind of thing you'd hear Carmen spin at the Planet. Unfortunately I'm kind of out of the scene at the moment. I don't want to fill it with Ani Difranco and whatnot; it must be danceable! I know there's a certain aesthetic to the music in gay male dance clubs... is there a female equivalent?

I think they've got something going for themselves but they are going to need mad promotion because there are lots of "average" rappers out there trying to get into the game. They are better than average, in fact they were really good but they need someone to "push" them into the limelight. Peace & Love :)

Q. The "art" we're talking about here refers to all kinds of aesthetic knowledge; visual art, music, movies etc.. Is this the case for all aesthetics? Examples will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

A. It is a very hard question? I think art don't use lies as much as it uses it magic to make ppl believe in it. like if you where sad and then you listened to a sad music you feel like it suits what you are going through. that piece of music was mint to make you feel sad and this is the truth then they work their magic and they make you sad as well. i guess it is the magic of the art not the lies...

My University Presentation Help!?
Q. I'm currently studying music at University and in December i have to give a ten minute presentation on a key concept or idea of Music for my Musical Culture module. I have to choose an idea and form an argument around it. I'm thinking of discussing the Aesthetics of music in particular how image and fashion is important to identify different types of music within our culture. Is this a valid argument? Could you explain in simple terms what people mean when they say 'aesthetics of pop music' Could you suggest another topic that would be better? All help would be greatly received as this presentation touches upon philosophy, which is a field i find difficult.
Asked by bornshopiluv - Mon Oct 13 16:26:36 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's a very broad topic, and you might find your presentation running overtime or not being well structured. Why don't you try the influence of fashion on music and vice versa, or the influence of art on music and vice versa. Fashion's a good one, because clothes changed to accommodate different dancing, different music got written, etc. etc. You would also touch on interaction between men and women over the centuries. See what the philosophers of each era that you look at say about music and fashion and how the development of philosophical thought seems to go on the same lines as the changes in music and fashion.

Does ANYone Else Find It Scary...?
Q. ..that in 20+ years, there'll be a generation of people who'll be convinced the "good old days" of music were the early 2000s when we had "classics" like Fergie, The Pu55y Cat Dolls, Fall Out Boy & Ashlee Simpson?? I mean they didn't *ask* to be born when they were, so their aesthetics of music will differ, but man, compare Fergie to...Janis Joplin.. Gotta strongly disagree w/ Sybil. I honestly cannot se how hacks from American Idol & Jessica Simpson is an *improvement* from acts like the Beatles & the Stones. Sorry. But 90% of what's on pop radio today is decidedly a huge step Backwards to my ears...
Asked by Fonzie T - Fri Feb 9 17:47:20 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You know, I was born in '93. And I pretty much hate Ashlee Simpson, Fall Out Boy, and the Pussycat Dolls. You have to remember that not all teenagers these days like the same stuff. Sure, there's a lot of kids out there that like that stuff, but there are also a lot of kids out there that like different stuff (better stuff IMO :]). And do you really think that Fall Out Boy fans are going to be as obsessed with them when they get older? People's music tastes change. And you're right, Janis Joplin is amazing.

Q. "The study of music provides an essential part of the foundation for humane civilization by furnishing students with a crucial aesthetic metaphor of what life at its best might be."

A. First of all, the base of the quote is that music is important in the the human world. In depth, it means that music is a necessary thing in the world, for it gives people a breakdown of other people's takes on life [in this case, "at its best" is a good feeling]

A. Most western music uses the same 12 equidistant tones (7 notes and 5 semi-tones), to devide a larger structure (thus called octave). This was created, thought, tought and discovered, by Orphics and Pythagoreans and may be trased as back as the -X th century.

If Robb Flynn (from Machine Head) is an atheist, what's with the lyrics in 'aesthetics of hate'.?
Q. "I hope you burn in hell" "May the hand of God strike them down". Just curious, Robb has written some stuff that can be interpreted as anti-religion but this comes across as anything but just that. Whilst I am religious this isn't to cause religion vs. atheism debate I just want to know people's interpretation (that's why it's in entertainment & music). Thank you :)
Asked by notts_outlaws_fan - Sat Nov 7 15:36:37 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Atheist or not, there are few phrases which have the emotional tags that "burn in hell" has. It symbolizes an eternal pain rather than a temporary ache which might soon heal. Many times, those outside of a religion may use the ideas and insults of that particular faith to further insult those they are speaking to. In particular, if an atheist left Christianity because of perceived hyppocricy, then he or she might lash out and call down for the hypocrites to be smote by the God they worship for their inner demons which effect their actions.
