Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny and thus they are considered to have a "sense of humour".

The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which stated that a mix of fluids known as humours (Greek: χυμός, chymos, literally juice or sap, metaphorically, flavour) controlled human health and emotion.

A sense of humour is the ability to experience humour, although the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends on a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence and context. For example, young children may favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons such as Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Nonsatirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery".

What comedies have the most sophisticated humor, and which ones have the most random humor?
Q. How do you feel about comedy shows that have random and nonsensical humor?
Asked by Nero T. Pickle - Thu Sep 17 11:12:31 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Big Bang Theory has a oddly inflated sense of humor. You have to have knowledge of pop culture, as well as stereotypes, and even basic scientific conceptualization. Frasier had a great sophisticated humor. Again very well rounded with cultural references, stereotypes, laced with high brow humor. Rosanne was always a random humor type of show for me. Never sure if the physical humor, familial jabs, or some other wacky joke was going to bring me to my knees in hysterical humor. I think The Simpsons were also like that as well as Family Guy. Stewie makes jokes that hit me a few minutes later and leave me going, 'oh man did he really just do that?'. But sometimes I'm sitting there going, 'did they really need that?'.

What characterizes a dry sense of humor? How does sarcastic humor work?
Q. Obviously sarcastic humor uses sarcasm, but can someone provide me with examples of that? And what makes a sense of humor dry?
Asked by Meaghan S - Fri Aug 25 14:58:17 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sarcasm: I see you've set aside this special time to humiliate yourself in public. If I throw a stick, will you leave? For more examples, see the link. A dry sense of humour is one that understates the joke, leaving it to the listener to see the funny side. Hope that helps!

How could I conduct a study about humor in advertising?
Q. I am a marketing major, hopefully graduating in december, and i need to come up with a project idea, preferable some type of research project that needs to be pretty large, but also feasible on barely any budget and with only having a few hours a week to invest. I want to study some aspect of consumer psychology, and really want to study humor in advertising and its polarizing affect, but cant think of a good way to go about it with my limitations. any help is appreciated!

A. maybe you could get two commercials from different brands for the same type of product and ask one group of people to say which commercial is more homorous and ask another group which brand they would choose and see if there is any correlation

Comedy has a popular meaning (stand-up, along with any discourse generally intended to amuse), which differs from its academic definition, namely the comic theatre, whose Western origins are found in Ancient Greece. The theatrical genre can be simply described as a dramatic performance pitting two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Comedy contains variations on the elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, repetitiveness, and the effect of opposite expectations, and there are many recognized genres.
