From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Jazz is a music genre that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions. From its early development until the present, jazz has incorporated music from 19th and 20th century American popular music. Its West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation, and the swung note. However, Art Blakey has been quoted as saying, "No America, no jazz. I’ve seen people try to connect it to other countries, for instance to Africa, but it doesn’t have a damn thing to do with Africa". The word "jazz" (in early years also spelled "jass") began as a West Coast slang term and was first used to refer to music in Chicago in about 1915. From its beginnings in the early 20th century jazz has spawned a variety of subgenres: New Orleans Dixieland dating from the early 1910s, big band-style swing from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, a variety of Latin jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz, free jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, jazz fusion from the 1970s, acid jazz from the 1980s (which added funk and hip-hop influences), and Nujazz in the 1990s. As the music has spread around the world it has drawn on local national and regional musical cultures, its aesthetics being adapted to its varied environments and giving rise to many distinctive styles. GNU Free Documentation License Is it possible to become good at jazz dancing even if you start out late? Q. I just started jazz dancing and I'm not very flexible, but I was wondering if I could ever become better at jazz dancing and flexibility or if that's something you are just good at or not? Thanks! Asked by Lilly - Wed Jul 12 16:51:27 2006 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, it depends on what prev. exp. you have in dance, and what type of commitment you intend to make to this activity. When I started out at 30 /yo, I practised 3-4 times a week, for 1-2 hrs at a time, and worked on perfecting my splits, turns and kicks every day. That year I was voted as most improved student for that year. As for making a professional career out of it?? Ask Karen Caine of the Royal Canadaian Ballet in Toronto (she was in her late teens when she first started ballet lessons). I want to be a very versatile music composer as well as a performer but it just seems very limited when I only have an option to choose between being a jazz or classical composer. Perhaps I should Double Major? Any suggestions? Asked by Allen - Wed Nov 18 12:43:37 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I want to major in Musical composition also, but i'm not sure which area yet since i'm only a junior. But I think a double major would be good if you want to be very versatile. Best of luck and hope I helped! :) Answered by ue - Wed Nov 18 17:15:04 2009 What suggestions do you have for instrumental jazz written in the 20s and 30s?
